ALT Jay focuses on twenty year old Jay Southern and his love of sport, explored through his relationship with his identical twin brother Matthew. Through Jay’s perseverance and the support of his family and trainer, having multiple disabilities has not stopped Jay from being involved in the sport of CrossFit and belonging to a community. The film shows Jay’s determination to break down barriers and bring about change for deaf and disabled people in sport and fitness.

About the director(s)

A UK south east based, documentary filmmaker. I am driven to highlight personal stories that explore themes of social change and community, drawing on my own lived experiences, as a disabled filmmaker, to improve authentic representation in stories.

In 2024 I was awarded funding from Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund to direct a short Channel 4 documentary, “ALT Jay” which aired as part of the Paralympics coverage and was screened at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival. This was my documentary directorial debut, earning me a ‘Best Debut Director’ nomination at Edinburgh TV’s Amplify x New Voice Awards. I was 1 of 30 filmmakers shortlisted at this years Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in Los Angeles, from over 11,750 films submitted, by more than 7,500 filmmakers worldwide.
